UL 142 vs. UL 2085: What a Tank Listing Means
What each listing tells you about the tank, what it does not tell you about the site, and why “double wall” and “protected” are not interchangeable.
The distinction
Product listing is one layer of the decision.
UL 142
Baseline shop-fabricated steel AST listing
UL 142 addresses common shop-fabricated steel aboveground tank construction and can include double-wall configurations.
UL 2085
Protected-tank performance concept
UL 2085 adds protected-tank fire and physical-protection performance requirements. It does not automatically approve the installation for every site.
Do not collapse the terms: double wall can provide integral secondary containment without making the tank UL 2085 protected.
Episode takeaways
Compare exact products, not brochure shorthand.
- UL 142 and UL 2085 are product construction/listing standards, not complete site-approval rules.
- A UL 2085 listing does not by itself determine setbacks, permits, or AHJ approval.
- Verify the exact model and exact listing rather than assuming every model in a product family carries the same certifications.
- Confirm the adopted code and site-specific requirements before using a listing as the basis for final selection.
